Alerting patients proved an easy pill to swallow.
By having a true 360º view of their patients, doctors at Old Hook Medical Associates were able to react to a potential threat and inform patients at the speed of click.
The New England Journal of Medicine recently published an article entitled, “Effect of Rosiglitazone on the Risk of Myocardial Infarction and Death from Cardiovascular Causes.” The conclusions of this analysis of previous studies of rosiglitazone (brand name, Avandia) suggest that this oral agent used to treat type 2 diabetes may be associated with increased risk of heart attack by 43 percent and death from cardiovascular causes by 64 percent.
When the doctors at Old Hook discovered this threat, they used their CRM system to access critical clinical records data and identified all patients who had been prescribed Avandia. Their staff then phoned each and every one and set up a doctor’s visit to discuss the potential side effects of the drug.
By leveraging technology, the practice was able to greatly enhance the quality care they provide patients, and perhaps prevented any adverse outcomes as a result of their overall health care regimen. It also clearly demonstrates how important the use of electronic medical records is in the health care industry today, especially in instances where lives may be at risk.
